Fuddy Dutty update

operation fuddy dutty!

Day one of Operation Fuddy Dutty has been going pretty well. We showed up at Rob’s place as planned and had him pretty well confused about what the hell we were doing cooking him breakfast at his place for. Right before his wife Stacy had to go to work, we told him the real plan: you have 3 hours to pack your crap, and take care of anything you need to do today because we are picking you up at noon to go to lunch and fly to Lubbock. He had no idea, it was coming, and the first part of our mission was a success.

On the other hand we had a few problems getting out to Lubbock. Our flight was delayed for 4 hours. Then once we got here Blake’s luggage was lost. I’m pretty sure we spent more money on airport beer than we will spend on any beer or food out here (8 bucks a pop! whoohooo). But we made it out and headed down to complete one of our newer traditions. We went down to the strip and procured a bottle of Grey Goose Citron to offer as a gift to BigE in the depot district. I’ll keep this post short, but lets just say that the bottle of goose didn’t last very long, and we had a great time hanging out and eating the best food in Lubbock. More to come!

Operation Flying Fuddy Dutty

Operation kidnap Fuddy Dutty:

Rob and Zach, GUNS UP at a game!

Well, soon operation kidnap Rob and take his butt out to Lubbock will soon be underway. Obviously I can’t post this blog post until after we get started tomorrow morning. This is top secret stuff!!!!

Basically I’m the single guy…. The bad influence on my friends; and now that Rob is married with a child his life has become a big “restrictive”. He didn’t think he was allowed to come out to Lubbock with us for the four day weekend trip to see the UT vs. Tech football game. This is a tradition that we have been doing since we graduated. We go back at least once a year (three time last year..whoooho!!!) for a big football game like the Aggies or UT. We go back and rip up the town! We do all the things we couldn’t afford to do often when we were starving college students. We see old friends, eat lots of Ellis, and don’t get much sleep. We eat at Spanky’s (must have cheese sticks!), have a beer at Scooners, and listen to music at Bleachers. We do all sorts of things that if Rob didn’t join us for… Well fak, it just wouldn’t be right! He might even die. We might even die!

Rob and Zach, GUNS UP at a game!

So unbeknownst to Rob, his lovely wife Stacey called me a few months ago and wanted to surprise Rob by letting him go to the game. We procured plane tickets, a hotel room, rental car, and ticket to the game. Stacy has been working with his boss and admin to make sure that his calendar is clear Thursday and Friday. Everything is falling into place for the kidnapping. If all goes well, John, Blake, Rob and I will be half drunk and having a good time in Lubbock by dinner time tomorrow.

Rob and Zach, GUNS UP at a game!

The plan right now is for Blake and I to go to his house early tomorrow morning and cook him surprise breakfast. After all, I’m sure he thinks we are total jerks since we didn’t get him anything for his birthday (not even a card lol!). After we make him think that his gift is a surprise breakfast, we are going to let him know he has 3 hours to pack his stuff and take care of anything he needs to take care of for the weekend because we will be picking him up for lunch and a flight to Lubbock at noon. His real gift from his wife and his boys will be a 4 day trip back to the motherland and the continuation of a tradition!  Should be fun!!! As far as I know he has no idea this is coming. Stacy even talked me into staging a fake fight with her when I was over at Rob’s house for Monday night football this week. She wanted me to fight with her about Rob not being able to go to the game. So I did! She ripped me up and down about how one day I too will grow up and get real responsibilities. That I would be like Rob and rather stay home and take care of my family than watch stupid football. We got into it for 3-4 mins and made Rob uncomfortable. Nice touch Stacy!!!! This will be an epic adventure.

I’ll try to take my camera tomorrow morning, and post updates before I hit the road.

Sooners vs. Longhorns, and a Red Raider stuck in the middle.

OU vs. Texas

UT vs. OU, a Red Raider in the middle of the Red River Shoot Out.

What a nice day!

First of all, I need to say a big thank you to Aubrey McClendon and Chesapeake energy for the fantastic tickets to the game! Gram, Uncle Bro, Richard (Brodie’s friend) and I were fortunate enough to get 50 yard line tickets to the OU vs. Texas rivalry game at the Cotton Bowl. We headed down to the game early so we could enjoy some of the State Fare of Texas before the game. We went to the car show and a few other exhibits before going in search of Fair food (yum!). I got a burger and beer at Jacks (hoped to see Jack, my old skydiving friend, but ran into his daughter and Dennis, another skydiver as they were working one of the stands). We also got Fletchers Corny Dogs, which is a tradition that has to be almost as old as the 100 year long rivalry between UT and OU. The seats were fantastic. We sat under the 2nd deck (read- in the shade!!!), on the 50 yard line.
My family is split. My Grandmother and most of her family are OU alum. My Dad and all of his brothers, including Bro(who was also a Silver Spur), are all from UT. So there I sat, the lone Red Raider in the middle, getting to enjoy one of the great college football traditions and rivalries of all time.

OU vs. Texas

If you want to read a blog post about the game itself, you are in the wrong place. There are 9 million other blogs out there where you can read about all of the stats, and how OU fell apart in the 4th quarter. I plan on having a little more fun. I’m going to give a scorecard to both teams based on everything BUT the actual game.

OU vs. Texas

Girls: Ok, I have to admit I was a little surprised. I’m sure there were plenty of really good looking Longhorn girls at the game, but I didn’t notice many. All of the super beautiful ladies that day seemed to be dressed in red, hailing from Soonerville. Apparently they also like to party since the young Sooner Theta that my grandmother (a Theta from the 40’s) introduced herself to, had her head buried in her lap hiding her head from the painful and dizzying light by the 3rd quarter. Boomer Sooner! Made me proud. 
A+ for beautiful girls for OU, and B+ for party skills.

Band: Before the game both bands played on the field. The UT band was HUGE, loud and awesome. When the OU band took the field my first thought was…. Is that it? Not only were they small, they were hard to hear. In fact, I didn’t realize that they were playing the national anthem until about a third of the way into the song because I just couldn’t hear it. If the UT band would have been playing, all 80,000 people in the crowd would have known it. A+ to the UT band.

Crowd: I’m a little bit torn on this one. The Sooners were much louder than the Longhorns were for most of the game. The Longhorns didn’t really seem to get into it until the beginning of the second half. So for outright school spirit and crowd participation, I have to give the Sooners the better grade.

On the other hand I think the Sooners need to work on their heckling skills. All of their anti UT stuff is pretty rudimentary. There is the UT sucks campaign. Basically they add “SUCKS!!!” onto the end of any of the chants that the Horns are doing. So Longhorns! Fight!” Becomes “ Longhorns!” followed by the Sooners screaming “SUCKS!”. They also have the “Horns Down” hand sign. They don’t really have their own hand sign that I can think of, and you have to admit that the Hookum! Sign is pretty cool. So not having your own sign and just turning UT’s sign upside down leave something to be desired. On the other hand the Longhorns alter their own fight song to slam their opponent. The official, unofficial version of Fight Texas Fight when playing OU includes: Give um Hell, Give um hell, OU SUCKS!!! So the two schools are in different leagues when it comes to hand signs, chants, and taunts. To this end, the horns make the grade, where the Sooners fall short.

The last award I want to give is the hillbilly award. This one has to go to the Sooners. The guy sitting in the row in front of us brought in a 20 year old, black and white portable TV. Now, I don’t mean he brought a little Watchman, or hand held TV. He brought one of the 20 lb. monsters that was cutting edge in the early to mid 1980’s requiring 10 D cell batteries to operate. First of all, he had 50 yard line tickets….why would you want to bring at TV? Second of all this thing was big and heavy! The seats at the Cotton Bowl are not what you would call spacious, and thus he had to hold this thing in his arms like a baby for the whole game (which most of the time everyone was standing). It cracked me up to see this guy with this big TV in his arms, messing with the antenna to try to make the ghosts and static in his black and white picture to get better…when 100 feet in front of him the actual game was right there!!!! So the Sooners get the best grade for Hillbilly fans.

OU vs. Texas

It was a great game and a great way to spend time with my grandmother and uncle.

OU vs. Texas

Texas Tech vs. TCU

John Durrant at the Tech vs. TCU game

After a looooong awaited off season, last weekend I was finally able to go to my first Texas Tech football game of the season. While disappointed that we didn’t play well and lost (more on that later), I have to admit that I had one of the best weekend days that I’ve had in a long time.

First of all it was Rob’s birthday. A group of 10 of us all met in Fort Worth at Joe T Garcias for lunch and drinks before the game. Almost all of the Tech crew was there including Blake, Keni, and John. Novie and Vivek, Rob’s parents, Stacy and little Liliana (don’t pronounce it her name lili-anna, I got yelled at for say that! Haha) were also with us. I enjoyed the meal and my friends; I had always heard about Joe T’s, but that was the first time had the chance to go. From there 6 of us went to the game on TCU campus. Yet another place that I have driven past but never set foot on.

TCU didn’t seem like they were prepared for the big crowd that came to the game. They said that was the 3rd largest crowd they have ever had and they did not seem like they were ready for it. Parking was a nightmare. The lines to get into the stadium were about the slowest lines I’ve ever been in other than the DPS. There were huge lines outside even as the game started just because there were not enough ticket agents, and the ones they had were ungodly slow. That, of course, didn’t stop me from sneaking in a dozen or so Joe T. Garcia tortillas and a few flasks of bourbon :) The Tech Survival kit . Rob’s dad joined us at the game, and I told him I’d that I had never done that before his son corrupted me. Happy Birthday Rob!!!!

Blake ruined my picture!!!!! :)

When we got to the game I sent a text message to my good friend Jonathan who is a TCU alum (and current MBA student) who I used to skydive with. He lives in the area, so I figured I had pretty good odds of him being there. It would be really good to see him since I normally only see him a few times a year. Luck was with me, and Jollyman was in fact at the game. I soon after got a text from Courtney, my beautiful Texas Tech skydiving buddy, saying that she too was at the game. Both of them ended up coming to sit with us for a while. That was nice! We had 5 of the normal Tech crew at the game, Robs dad (very cool guy) and two friends that I usually only get to see a few times a year. That helped make up for the terrible game!!! We sucked… I have to admit it. We couldn’t seem to catch anything, and our QB seemed like he was getting nervous in the pocket. No good when you are a passing offense!!!! TCU didn’t play much better. Four field goals…how boring is that? As bad as we played they should have killed us by 30 points.

Zach and JollyMan Jonathan Spells at Tech vs. TCU game

You guys would be proud of me. On the way out of the stadium I tossed my last tortilla. A cop saw me do it and “detained me”. He got into cop mode, pointed at me grabbed his radio like he was talking or listening to someone important and demanded that I give him ID “right now!”. He pointed to a spot about 3 feet away from him where I was to stand. Being the blogging fool that I was, I wasn’t worried at all about getting a ticket or getting arrested. I thought… if I get arrested for throwing a tortilla…that will be the best blog post of all time!!!! Haha. Jolly had my back, standing a few feet away from me acting like he was just a fan, but keeping tabs on everything. Thanks for having my back Jolly! The rest of the gang waited for me just outside the main isle. I’m just glad he didn’t search me since I had an empty 500ml flak in my back pocket. I don’t think anything would have happened since it was empty, but I’m sure he would have messed with me more. About 2 mins or so later, the cop gave me my ID back and told me I could go…. But the Matador song had just started…. I couldn’t leave in the middle of the Matador song!!!! So I walked right up to the rail next to the cop, put my guns up and finished the song!!!! “ Strive for honor….evermore….LONG LIVE THE MATADOOOOOORRRRRR!!!!!”

From there we went to the TCU tailgate party with some of John’s work friends. We talked to some great people, had some food and drinks and ended up heading back to Jonathan’s house to hang out. We told old stories, watched skydiving video’s and just had a good time for a few hours.

What a great weekend!!!!

Texas Tech Vs. Alabama at the Cotton Bowl. Post game

GUNS UP, just before the game.

Well it was not to be Tech fans! Texas Tech lost the Cotton Bowl to the Crimson (sister kissn’) Tide of Alabama yesterday. Blake, John, Keni and I all went and had a great time none the less. Yes we lost, but as strange as it sounds I’m ok with that. They are a great team with a great ranking and we played them very well. They have one of the best defenses in the country, and we didn’t have any interceptions or fumbles. The game was tied until the last second as that field goal just squeaked in. That’s a loss I can be proud of! Losing to some no name school because we were being cocky or had too many interceptions drives me crazy. Our loss (ass kicking) from UT drove me crazy. We didn’t even show up to play that game. But this game was different, and oddly I can deal with that.

Once again I have to thank the Tech fans. I saw more tortillas at this game than any other game I’ve been to in the last several years. Some of you still have some things to learn (like corn tortillas don’t fly well, stick with small flour), but I was happy to see the tortilla tradition was alive and well at the Cotton Bowl.

Bama fans showed up in good numbers and did an excellent job of supporting their team. There were a few open seats in their section, but not many.

Even though we didn’t win, we had a great time going to see Texas Tech play in the Cotton Bowl with good friends, expensive beer (and a few jack and dr. peppers :) ), and 30,000 plus raving Red Raider fans.
