off camera flash

Quinceanera

Just a quick one:
I was shooting a quinceanera this weekend, that was held in a large ballroom. To help with some of the dancefloor shots, I had a second flash on a small stand that was bouncing extra light off of the ceiling to help me get better exposure in the dark and large room. The way it works is pretty simple; when my main flash on my camera fires, it sends a radio signal to he other flash to fire at the same time.

I noticed a young girl (9 years old?) was staring at the flash that I had sitting on the table, and realized that she didn’t make the connection between the flash going off, and my camera. As far as she could tell, it was just some sort of bright flashing light that randomly went off. She would run over and grab one of her friends and tell them to watch the flash. I was standing right behind them, just a few feet away and was getting a bit of a kick out of watching them trying to figure out the flash.

Dog’s ass, Communication fialure.

I was recently hired by a couple to take some photos of them so they could have some nice casual shots of them and their dog to have out at their wedding. We had a nice shoot at a few different locations outside on a steamy summer morning. After the shoot was done, I was communicating with them via e-mail discussing which photos they wanted to have prints of, and specific touch-ups and changes that they wanted to see. This was from one of the e-mails she sent me requesting a touch-up:

“One more…can i see photo 36 in color and if you can photoshop the dogs butt out of the picture please. ”

So I looked up Photo 36, and this is what I saw…..

Well, what could I say? They were paying me for this work, and if she wanted me to remove the dogs butt…..I guess I needed to try to remove the Dogs butt. It was strange and probably not something I would advertise in the future, but hey, who I am to question what they want? So I got to work and proceeded to remove the offending area from the poor dog. This was my first attempt:

I then decided that maybe it would look better with black hair, so I came up with this:

blackbutt

This is the e-mail I sent to her:

Ok, so I have to admit that I’ve never removed the butt from a dog (or anything for that matter) before. Let me know if this is what you are looking for.
I also removed the grass from his back, touched up your eyes a little, and brightened up the smiles a hair.
I had trouble making it look right with the brown fur, so I also included a black version of your dog as well.

That is also cropped to 11×14 ratio.

:) It looks like G’s smiling in that pic because his dog has no butt.

Then she wrote back:

that is the wrong picture.

i am talking about he one where we are by the cliff and the dog is walking away….g and I are the only ones near the cliff.

too funny.

After another e-mail, I found out this is the photo she meant:
(note the dog walking away over the guys shoulder)

And this was what she was looking for:

“What we’ve got here, is failure to communicate!”

:)

Just a few pics

I thought I’d just post a few old pics that I enjoy. No microphones….That was the only rule/theme for this set.

Melissa Ham-Ellis photo shoot

I’ll see if I can keep the word to photo ratio in this post higher than normal. Miss Melissa stopped by Dallas for a few days, and we had the chance to take some pics. Check it out!

I think this is my fav. Mel pic. The color version is nice as well.

Ryann Rathbone Photo Shoot

One of the things that I was really looking forward to when I moved out of my apartment, and into my house was that I would be able to set up a room as my photo studio. Well, that and not having to listen to my neighbors have sex though my walls or ceiling were both high on the list of things I was looking forward to with home ownership. Technically I had a room set up that way at the apartment, but that room was my dining room/weight room/ photo studio/bar. I find it convenient that since I have a room dedicated totally to photography, and I actually have my dining room table in my dining room, as opposed to on my back porch. I have the studio almost finished (just need to remove the fan and put up some track lighting), but until this week I haven’t had a chance to try it out and see how it works. Fortunately for me, I passed the slime ball test, and Miss Ryann Rathbone agreed to come over and help me break in the new studio.

We had a lot of fun and took about 700 pics over the period of a few hours. I was able to try out some different lights (hot lights, flash, mix of the two, etc.) and get the lighting in the studio dialed in. I also got to shoot all of my differnt lens combinations and see how the size of the room would work out for the differnt glass. We only did 1 outfit change, and very minor hair/makeup work. I love her freckles, and was happy she let me take lots of pics without any makeup covering them up.

Totally off topic:
My best friend told me about 3 week ago that he was a little upset that he wouldn’t be able to use any more of his firewood this year since it was so warm out and near the end of Feb. It was probably 75 degrees at the time, and seemed like spring was here. I don’t think he believed me when I reminded him that it was still only Feb. and that last year we had snow in April. In the last 7 days we have gone from 80 degrees, to snow, back to 80 degress and back again. I write this to you from my bed, next to my fire, with a bottle of wine and half full glass of merlot. There is about an inch of snow on the ground right now, and they expect another 2-4 inches by tomorrow. I know that isn’t much for you yank’s reading this, but for Dallas 5 inches of show is about 3 years worth of the white cold stuff.

Off to yet ANOTHER totally unrelated tangent. I’ve decided that I”m not going to answer with the word “busy” as any part of a reply when asked how I”m doing. I’m always busy, and that term has been a part of my reply for years now. First of all, everyone is busy, so why would they care if I’m busy or not? Don’t they assume that I’m busy? Second of all….well there is no second. It’s just pointless to answer with “busy” in my reply. So no more “busy but good”, or “GREAT! but busy”. Nope. Those days are gone.
Now I just have to figure out what the hell I’m going to say. I’ll think of something when I’m not so busy.
