The Backsliders at Lee Harvey’s

IMG_0025

I had a good feeling that I wouldn’t be disappointed going to see the band I have been trying to see for so long this weekend. Three different artists, from three different styles of music, independently have recommended that I go check out the BackSliders show. While it took a little while it took me a little while to match up my schedule with their show schedule, this weekend at Lee Harvey’s, I finally got to see the BackSliders live.

First, we must set the stage: Lee Harvey’s.

Lee Harvey’s is a one of a kind restaurant, bar and music venue located south of downtown in The Cedars area. Lee Harvey’s is an old house set on a large lot (I’d say at least half an acre…maybe a full acre), surrounded by barbwire, concertina wire, and an industrial storage lot complete with a well fed junk yard guard dog. The front yard is the main place where folks hang out at space with tons of large picnic benches (30?) and fire cauldrons to keep you warm on cold nights. There is a nice sized stage and an outdoor bar area. Inside is the main bar and a few small rooms, sitting areas, and a pool table. The drink prices are reasonable and the food is fantastic (the burger and the chipolte panini are highly recommended….and may I suggest the fries AND onion rings as great sides). The first time I went down there was about a year and a half ago with Blake, and my first impression was an unusual one. The setting there is great, but not what or where you would expect to find it. In an area that isn’t very residential or retail (not much by the way of housing/retail/business) you have this space carved out and fenced in with an amazing mix of people. Some nights it’s very young and Uptownish, and other nights, like Saturday night, you had a mix of Uptown, a little bit of Uptown, and a mix of folks from all over the city. Lee Harvey’s is a one of a kind Dallas night spot, and it comes with my highest recommendation.

ON TO THE MUSIC!

The BackSliders put on a great show. Their sound and style is upbeat and rocky, but not heavy. They played a few covers to get things going, but the majority of their music was their original music. Their lead singer, Kim Pendleton-Bonner, has a great voice that is sultry and fun to listen to. When she really get’s, going a hint of rasp makes itself known. The combination of her voice with a very talented group of musicians up there with herd came together very well. I loved how they kept the energy levels high, and kept the crowd engaged without going over the top and leaving their own style and sound to suffer.

If you get the chance to see the Backsliders, or to have a beer and burger at Lee Harvey’s, I think you will enjoy your experience Below you will find links, music, and a purple dragon.

Garner Twins at All Good Cafe

Good food, good music, beautiful girls and twins….what’s not to like?

Beth and Linda Garner

Friday night I had the opportunity to go see a really show that I’ve wanted to see for quite a while now. The All Good Cafe in Deep Ellum had their “Red Neck Happy Hour” Friday afternoon from 7-9 featuring the Beth Garner Band, with special guest Linda Garner(AKA Lyndah Garner). I have known Linda for a little while now and have been lucky enough to see her play stand up bass for Kristy Kruger, and Cricket Taylor. This was the first time that I was able to see her play the electric base and the first time that I have been able to see her play with her sister Beth.

Lyndah Garner

Linda and Beth grew up in the DFW area and both went to school at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Beth calls Nashville her home now, and is a full time musician. Linda has a career in Dallas, and plays periodically with a number of musicians around town. The pedigree of bands the Garner girls have played with, and traveled the country with (both together and separately) is long and impressive. I knew of several of the bands just from talking with Linda, but in doing research for this blog post, I found out the list was about twice as long as I thought it was.

Beth Garner

I really enjoyed this show. The All Good Cafe is a great venue for live music, and I really liked the idea of being able to see good live music on the weekend, and not having to wait until midnight to hear it. Being happy hour, I was able to head out right from work and didn’t have to deal with the traffic or parking trouble I typically have to deal with prime time Friday night downtown. The All Good food is just that (try the chicken fried steak!), and there is plenty of room to find a comfortable spot to start your night, or spend your evening. Their stage is large enough to accommodate even the largest bands, but still allows some breathing room between the band and the crowd.

Beth and Linda Garner

The music helped me get my weekend started off a a good note! It was interesting for me to hear Beth sing, because I have never heard Linda sing and seeing her twin up there let it loose with her pipes was pretty cool. On a side note, doing my research I found one band that had Linda listed as also singing backup vocals. Maybe she does sing after all :) . Beth’s voice was strong, and her skills on the guitar were impressive. I didn’t realize how hard that girl could rock out on the electric guitar! It was also fun for me to see Linda play the electric bass, since I’ve almost exclusively seen her play the stand up bass (she kicks ass on both, in case you were wondering :) ). If I had to classify the sound, I would say blues with a pretty rocky edge to it. You might even go as far to call some of the tracks classic rock. They had a great steel guitar player along with them that really added to the music and added a hint of Texas country to the sound. They played a few covers, but the majority of the music was original. I had high expectations, and I was in no way let down. Make sure and check them out if either of the twins are playing in your area, and if you haven’t been to All Good, drop by for a great meal, a few drinks, and/or some live music when you get the chance.

Dog’s ass, Communication fialure.

I was recently hired by a couple to take some photos of them so they could have some nice casual shots of them and their dog to have out at their wedding. We had a nice shoot at a few different locations outside on a steamy summer morning. After the shoot was done, I was communicating with them via e-mail discussing which photos they wanted to have prints of, and specific touch-ups and changes that they wanted to see. This was from one of the e-mails she sent me requesting a touch-up:

“One more…can i see photo 36 in color and if you can photoshop the dogs butt out of the picture please. ”

So I looked up Photo 36, and this is what I saw…..

Well, what could I say? They were paying me for this work, and if she wanted me to remove the dogs butt…..I guess I needed to try to remove the Dogs butt. It was strange and probably not something I would advertise in the future, but hey, who I am to question what they want? So I got to work and proceeded to remove the offending area from the poor dog. This was my first attempt:

11x14nobutt

I then decided that maybe it would look better with black hair, so I came up with this:

blackbutt

This is the e-mail I sent to her:

Ok, so I have to admit that I’ve never removed the butt from a dog (or anything for that matter) before. Let me know if this is what you are looking for.
I also removed the grass from his back, touched up your eyes a little, and brightened up the smiles a hair.
I had trouble making it look right with the brown fur, so I also included a black version of your dog as well.

That is also cropped to 11×14 ratio.

:) It looks like G’s smiling in that pic because his dog has no butt.

Then she wrote back:

that is the wrong picture.

i am talking about he one where we are by the cliff and the dog is walking away….g and I are the only ones near the cliff.

too funny.

After another e-mail, I found out this is the photo she meant:
(note the dog walking away over the guys shoulder)

And this was what she was looking for:
