Texas Tech vs. Texas AM: Vick Um! and more

Roy
Pics from the trip are in the gallery. Gallery is right-chow

Ahhhh!!!!!
Well the trip that I look forward to all year, every year has come to an end for 2007. I think this is the 7th or 8th year that Rob and I have gone back to Lubbock for a big football game (AM or UT) with a number of our friends, including: Blake, John, Sean, Bobbie, Chad, Kendra and several others. This year it was Blake, Rob and I going back for my favorite Tech home game: Tech vs. the feared and menacing sister kissing Texas Aggies! More to come on that soon.
the goose

Zach and Tim

We headed out to Lubbock just after work, and made it to see Ellis just after 10pm for some of the best food around, and to present our offering of “the goose”. Tim met us up there and we hung out for most of the night in that area and had a good time. Rob and the goose became real good friends, and we met some nice people along the way. :) . In fact, the goose stayed with Rob for the next 24 hours or so. It was cool to see how many people were there now that they re-opened Klusoz, and open the back door from that bar into Ellis’s area. By the way, Klusoz seems to be even cool than it was when I was a student hanging out in there. Check it out if you get a chance.

Ellis!!!!
Ellis!

Most of the Saturday was in preparation for the game. We crashed at Tim’s place for the weekend and he was nice enough to start us off with a good breakfast to get us going. Thanks Tim!!! We headed to campus around noon or so, and ended up having to park wayyyy the funk out there! The cool thing about that was we got to see all of the tailgating that was going on. A few years ago the tailgate scene at Tech wasn’t very big, but in just the last two years it seems to have grown 10 fold. There were hundreds of campers, bbq’s, smokers and tail gating set ups of all types. We slowly made our way over to Jones Stadium and got to check out our season tickets (thanks john!). Our seats rock!!! 30 yard line, lower level, 8th row, and we had the end seats that were right next to the student section. Of course, everyone knows the student section is where all the fun is! I even got a few action shots of Gram Harrell passing to Michael Crabtree from our seats.

Gram Harrell passing to Michael Crabtree

We have a lot of history with the Aggies, and the Aggie game is always the one I look the most forward to. Nothing is more fun to me than to beat the sister kissing Aggies at Jones Stadium, and since they haven’t beaten us there since 1993 I have had many years to bask in the glory of a victory over the Aggies. The game itself was great. We beat them 35 to seven, put up over 400 yards passing and kept them from scoring after the first 5 mins or so in the first quarter.

Red Raider in Vick shirt with an Aggie

One of the funny things a bout this game was all of the hype over the Michael Vick shirts or the “Vick Um” shirts that have been in the news so much. First, to be clear:
I think the shirts are in bad taste.
I’m glad the University took the steps they took to stop the production of them, and to let the Aggies know that they didn’t approve of the shirts.
But what was funny to me was that if the national news hadn’t made such a big deal about the shirts, it never would have been a big deal! But since they did make a big deal out of it… you saw Vick references all over the place. People with Vic hats on, Vick body paint, Vick sighs etc. It was pretty funny.
more vick fun, notice the shoes

The most unusual, and oddly entertaining thing about this football game: The Aggies didn’t show up. They usually come in force taking up big sections of the stadium and doing their chants and yells loud enough for you to think you were in College Station. This year, I think the Aggie band had more people than the rest of the stadium cheering for AM. The Klan (yell) leaders did their little dances, and you couldn’t hear them at all. They did not have the impact as fans on the stadium that they usually have, and that is the first time I’ve seen that in the 10 years or so that I’ve been going to this game. Maybe they gave up since they haven’t won since 93 in Lubbock? Maybe we are too nasty for them…
Who knows, but this year they didn’t show up and they didn’t represent like they always do.

random pretty girl wanting to hang out with the studs… ok.. we are pretty sure someone bet her to come and ask to be in our pic…but she’s still cute and every blog post can use more cute girls.

What else? We did the anual Double T bench picture, and ate at Spanky’s. Spanky’s added downstairs outdoor coverd porch to eat in, and their cheese sticks are just as good as they always have been. What can I say!?!?! It was another great trip back to Lubbock, and I can’t wait to get back out there! I might have to head up to the OU game…. We’ll see.

OU Texas and House Warming

Zach and Gram

The weekend before last was a very busy, but also fantastic weekend for me. Saturday I went with my sister and Grandmother to the OU vs Texas game at the State Fair of Texas. Sunday we followed that up with my housewarming party with friends and family.

Gram

This is my third year to go with my grandmother to the OU vs. Texas game, and I’m really enjoying the tradition even though I am neither a Sooner or a Longhorn. My grandmother is about to turn 80, and she is one of the few women her age who have college degrees. She is a Sooner to the core, and also a huge sports fan. In fact, her sports knowledge and her capacity to follow sports on a daily basis puts me and most of the other sports fans I know to shame. So this game is a big deal for her, and we always get great seats from her nephew (I think that makes him my 2nd cousin once removed…either way THANKS AUBREY!!!!) and we always have a great time going to the Fair and then to the game. We completed all of the necessary traditions like getting a Fletcher’s hotdog, checking out the car show before the game.

The game was a great football game! If you follow this blog you know I bleed Red and Black from Texas Tech, but I also love Big 12 and college football in general. I usually root for UT in this game just because of state loyalty, but this time around I was pulling for OU. The game was a game that you could enjoy even if you were not a fan of either team. It was a high scoring game, but also a very close game. The spread was never more than 7 points as you watched to of the biggest rivals in college football history battle it out in front of 80,000 fans in a traditional game that my Dad watched as a young boy. If you have never been to this game, it is an event in and of itself. The stadium is always packed, and it is split right down the 50 yard line: red on one side, and burnt orange on the other. The crowd is loud, rowdy and something that you have to experience fully appreciate.

OU vs Texas game

The next day it was time for the housewarming party! I spent most of the morning getting the house and yard ready for the first big party in the new casa. I got a ton of food and booze (including a self service bar) and had the smoker packed with things that make you smile. We had a pretty good turn out and I would consider the first party a big success. After all, you can’t really call a house a home until you have had all your peeps over for food and drink right?

Vamessa Peters and Lanky at Opening Bell

Vanessa Peters

Three posts in 3 days! You guys are not allowed to give me any more crap for at least 2 weeks; so keep your e-mails and IM’s sweet like sunshine and lemon drops.

Last week I realized that it had been several months since I had gone to any live music to relax, take a few pics and right a handy dandy review of the show, and last Saturday night I remedied that situation with a trip down to South Side Lamar. The show that night was Vanessa Peters opening for Lanky at Opening Bell (Still Standard and Pours to me!!!). I’ve been wanting to see Lanky for a long time, and I think I had several near misses where I as able to stay for an earlier act, but not stay for his show. So it was nice to be able to finally see him play.

Lanky

I would say that Vanessa opened for him, but that isn’t exactly true. She did play first, but instead of 2 shows, they did a tag team series of 4 short sets. That is, she went first and played for 40 mins or so, then Lanky played for 40 and repeated that process 2 times. This was pretty cool and let some of the people in the shop who couldn’t stay real late see both artists play. I digress, as usual. What was I talking about? Oh yea! Vanessa! Cute blond with a guitar, how could I forget? Vanessa’s style is pretty traditional folk I would say. Poetry with simple guitar accompaniment She played an old REM cover, at one point that was a crowd favorite, but overall her style is old school folk. Her sound was interesting because many of her songs didn’t have a lot of inflection (not monotone, but not much vocal movement) but she really does have a broad range in her voice and in some songs she really showed that off. Her song Little Films was a little bit more rocky, and really fun to listen to. Some of her other songs almost hypnotize you into a state of comfort. She was very enjoyable to listen to, and you could really tell she enjoys what she is doing.

Vanessa Peters

I only made it through the first of Lanky’s sets, but I’m glad that I didn’t miss it. His style is a little more rocky/pop/acoustic, and his performance was very well tuned. I’m not sure how long he has been playing or performing, but on stage he came across as someone who really knew what they were doing, and someone who was comfortable making great live music in front of the crowd. This freakn’ drives me crazy, because his voice reminds me of someone you would know… but I cant place it. He reminds me a lot of Patrick Ryan Scott (but most of you wouldn’t know him). Regardless, his music was very refined, and his performance was great.

Vanessa Peters

I think you would enjoy either of these artists if they were in your area. Of course, if you are ever looking for a cool little coffee shop (that also sells beer and wine!), and listen to some free live music make sure to check out Opening Bell on the bottom floor of South Side Lamar. Pascale and the gang will take good care of you!

Viv and Novie Gupta’s wedding

So what follows an over the top bachelor party? An over the top wedding of course! That’s right, after 2 years of an engagement that included a diamond ring that cost as much as a nicely equipped sedan, a helicopter hovering over New York City, and a calculated weekend plan, Viv and Novie got married! The wedding was pretty amazing.; it was exhausting for all involved, but absolutely amazing.

Me and Lili, Photo by Lili’s Papa, Rob Eppers

I was smart and took off Thursday and Friday before the wedding. My line of thought was that since this was a dual wedding (Hindu and Catholic) with two separate ceremonies on two days, with the rehearsal and all the “best man duties” I would be responsible for, it would only be smart to take those days off. At that point I didn’t realize that it would actually be a 4 day long series of events and ceremonies that started Wed’s night, and didn’t end until lat Sat. night/Sunday morning.

So let’s see if I can remember the order here. The first ceremony was the mehndi Wednesday night at Viv’s folks house. This started around 6 or so, and ended near midnight. There was food, drink, and lots of people! The main purpose, as far as I understood it, was for the girls to get their henna tattoos on their hands and feet for the wedding. There was some amazing work that was done! I have never really seen how that process worked, and it was pretty cool to see how it was all done. Most of the girls had a lot of work done, but Viv’s little sister (I know what you are thinking John! and now I know what Viv’s thinking too :) ) and Novie had very large scale and very intricate art applied to their body. I think Novie’s henna took about 2 hours, and is still very clear and looking good 2 weeks later. They tried to make me get one on my hand, but I was afraid it was some type of ploy to make fun of the white guy. You know…. “Just kidding!!!! Only gay guys get that done in our culture, and that stuff won’t come off for two weeks! hahaha!!!!” So I made Viv get his done first before I would submit to the process. The lady doing the work was Muslim and couldn’t touch men, so one of the friends of the family put some henna on our hands.

just to tease John and Viv :)

Thursday morning there was a ceremony at Viv’s folks place. There was a Hindu priest, food, booze and a ritual including a cauldron of fire in the living room that lasted around 2 hours I think. The ceremony was full of rituals and sacrifices lead by the priest, and mainly involving Viv and his family. What struck me as funny was that the ceremony itself didn’t seem to be sacred or reverent. That is, there were people talking on phones in the background, chatting in the kitchen, and coming and going as they please. From my culture, if a pastor/priest is doing a ceremony, unless you want the “I will rip your heart out and show it to you before you die if you do not respect the ceremony” look from at least a grandmother, a father, and maybe an in law…. you had best be quiet, or take your conversation or business elsewhere. It wasn’t that way at all, and that made me uncomfortable at first, but by the end of the weekend I was used to it. Viv also got smeared with some kind of mud at the end of this thing. Any of you who know Viv and his 3 showers and 82 hand washings a day will surely get pleasure out of the pics of him covered in mud. :) Luv ya brownie! Viv’s mom and sister dressed me in traditional Indian clothing; I’ll see if I can find any pics of the fish out of water.

So that took us to about 1 or two on Thursday. The next event was the rehearsal, and rehearsal dinner. I think the rehearsal was around 3 or 4, and the dinner was at 3 Forks at 6 or so. It didn’t dawn on me until a few hours before the dinner that a lot of Viv’s family who flew in from India (read: a country where the majority of the population considers the cow to be sacred, and never eaten….) might take offense to the dinner being at a steak place. Even with all of the possible drama, the rehearsal and the rehearsal dinner went over very well. The food was fantastic, and I didn’t make a total ass of my self on my speech like some *cough*John*Cough*.

Mrs. Kendra Ramick and I at the rehearsal.

Then came Friday. Friday was the Indian/Hindu wedding. The wedding was something totally new and amazing to me. Viv rode in on a horse, and had all of his friends and family dancing around him and 2 drummers as he made his way in. The ceremony itself was very similar to the fire ceremony on Thursday, except this time Novie and her family were there. There were lots of sacrifices, and fire, and just like Thursday, there were lots of people coming and going, talking, not paying attention and doing their own thing. This was still a little odd to me, but I was starting to get used to it. Viv was pretty lost during most of the wedding, and it was comical to watch him try to figure out exactly what it was that he was supposed to be doing. The fire did go out at one point, and I’m pretty sure that wasn’t supposed to happen. After the wedding there was a great Indian meal, and lots of dancing. I got out there and tried to shake my groove thing. Indian dancing is actually pretty cool. Most of the music was real similar to American Dance/techno music as far as the beat and bass were concerned. I didn’t realize that going into it at all. Viv’s sister (settle down John… settle down) gave the white folks some tips on what to do and we had a great time. My goal is to get Rob on camera demonstrating the 3 basic Indian dance move we learned and relied on: Shoulders. The Light Bulb. The super tricky shoulder dip and twist thingy. :)

Finally came Saturday. The Catholic wedding was held at a church less than a mile away from where I lived. The wedding itself went pretty well. Novie was beautiful along with her bridesmaids, and Viv looked dapper standing there with the groomsmen (who I have to say, in since they were the same folks as were in this post…. were all men I was proud to stand next to and am proud to call my friend). The only real drama came when they had a little issue with the unity candle part of the ceremony…and yet another fire that was not supposed to go out, went out. Then Viv grabbed the lighter and tried to light it, and it would go. The priest tried to help to no avail, and in the end when there was supposed to be the middle “unity candle” burring after being lit by both Viv and Novie, and the other individual candles blown out, there was only Viv’s individual candle burring and the unity candle and Novie’s candle were out.

After the wedding came the reception. This is where things really went over the top. The party was at the Ritz (which just opened in Dallas). I can’t even begin to describe to you what this reception was like. There was a 4 course meal, and a 9 man band. Between each course you had plenty of time to get up and dance on the huge dance floor. Each meal was served at the same time for the entire table. Our table probably had 20 people at it, and 20 people on the Ritz staff came out and put every plate at the table down at the same time. On top of that, I had the best steak that night that I’ve ever had in my life. It was a fillet with some sort of blue cheese topping that I can’t even begin to describe to you, or ther than to say I was born and raised in cattle country and if I say it’s the best steak I’ve had, trust me it was good stuff! I danced with anybody who would let me dance with them, and had a fantastic time. I gave yet another speech, and I didn’t jack that one up too bad either (yay for communication degrees! whoohoo).

“>

And that ended the 4 day long wedding. It was one of the most busy 4 day periods I’ve ever had, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Congrats to Viv and Novie, and thanks for letting me be a part of your big day!

Grand Cayman, and Viv’s Bachelor party

cayman

So last year we had Operation Fuddy Dutty to get Rob back to Tech, and out of his Fuddy Dutty ways for the weekend, and that was a small task compared to what we had to undergo this year. Vivek got married, and as the best man I was in charge of planning a bachelor party of epic proportion. A bachelor party that would be up to Viv’s standards, and a bachelor party that we will talk about for years to come. The Bachelor party to kick all the other bachelor parties in the stones.

My first challenge was the he wanted a trip bachelor party like we did for Blake. He didn’t want just a night out on the town, food, drink, half naked girls and one dollar bills…. He wanted to spend a few days somewhere with the boys and have a good time, but we had some constraints to work with concerning $$$$ since Blake and I just bought homes, John moved to Grand Cayman to work and live, and in general the group was low on cash. We ended up going with Grand Cayman for a few reasons. First of all John lived down there so we could crash with him and save big bucks. Also several of us were able to call in some favors and get free flights (yay air miles!!!). We even got Viv’s ticket covered for free (thanks Dad!). Thus we could get several of us down there at low cost, including Viv, and just have to come up with come $$$ for the time we were there. The next challenge was me just wanting to be evil. Those of you who know Viv, know he is a control freak. He likes to get things his way and likes to be in charge. So I thought it would be fun to not let him know where we were going until the last possible second. Now, understand this isn’t easy with his personality, or with anyone concerning an international trip. But we were successfully, and he did not know our final destination until the final leg of our flight. When we left Miami for Cayman, he got onto the plane thinking we were going to San Salvador, El Salvador; he did not realize where we were going until we were over the middle of the ocean half way to Cayman. Lucky for us, he totally took the bait on a faint I planned when we landed in Miami and was trying to figure out if we had security set up for our stay in El Salvidor (score one for the home team!). I could write all the things we did to keep him from knowing where he was going…but that might make this post a little too long.

cayman

Cayman was pretty fantastic!!!! John’s apartment (read extended stay motel) was right on the water. When I say right on the water, I mean it was probably 30-40 yards to the water, and 10-20 yards to the beach. BEAUTIFUL view, with a huge patio. We had a great time while we were down there. We spent a lot of time snorkeling and in the water, a lot of time drinking, a lot of time hanging out, and just had fun in general. One of the highlights for me was the fishing trip we took early on Ryan’s last day. We went out to the reef to do some fishing and swimming. The water is so crystal clear, and it was so beautiful out there. I think Viv really enjoyed that as well. In fact I think we all did (Fu@kn’ Rob!!!).

We got to meet some crazy cats who work down there from all over the world! I tried to hook John up with a few locals by being a good wingman, but we were not successful. I learned that most Canadians don’t get John’s or humor and just htink he’s an ass. But, if you look at the pics in the gallery, there is one Canadian I caught sharing a moment with John hint hint and she’s hot and got his humor. As of last check, he still doesn’t have her number. Sigh…what am I going to do with you John! And last but not least, I got to have a margarita at Margaritaville. As a mild parrot-head, that was pretty cool.
cayman

Good times were had by all! I think it was a great trip we will all remember when we are old men smoking cigars reminiscing on the good old days.
