Well holly balls (can i say that on a worksafe sight?). I’m one post away from 200 posts! I never thought I’d write so much when I started this blog, and I defiantly never thought that so many of you sea monkeys out there in cyberspace would actually read the nonsense I write!
But here we go, with post number 199.
The last week or two have been big weeks for me in the realm of live music. In just over 7 days I saw three fantastic live shows. Two of those shows were shows that I’ve wanted to see for a long time, and just never had the chance (Bob and David). The third show was my personal favorite live performing artists: Ian Moore. On top of that I finally got to see a show at Poor David’s Pub’s down town location.
I’ll limit this post to Ian Moore and Kullen at Poor David’s Pub downtown. As always the show was fantastic, and the music was superb. Even with the token drunk girl in the back row slurring and screaming “Satisfiiiiieeeeedddddd!!!!!” between every single song, and the drunk on the front row who thought he was the world’s best comedian, the show didn’t disappoint. Ian had the comedian thinking he was getting laughs from Ian’s comments about him, when in reality he was making him look like the jackass he was. Ian did finally play the slow (and incredible) version of Satisfied for the back row momma’s delight. Even after seeing him play at least a dozen shows in half a dozen venues, in 2 states…. I still think sir Ian has the best live show around and urge all of you to check him out when he is in your corner of the coral reef (another sea monkey reference….very tropical….keeps me in a good mood in this cold winter….rambling….rambling….SUSAN!!!).
As far as the venue goes, I had mixed feelings. It has a really nice layout for live music. In fact, it reminded me of a mini Billy Bob’s with the horseshoe shaped narrow elevated bar area, looking over the slightly lowered table seating in front of the stage. For a smaller venue, it comfortably holds quite a few people in such a way that everyone can enjoy, see (sea? hummm) the show. The lights and sound system were great, and overall it was very enjoyable. It is also in the up and coming area by South Side Lamar just south of 30 and downtown Dallas (just a short swim away from my favorite coffee and music shop once known as Sandard and Pour’s Coffee). I only had two things that rubbed me the wrong way about Poor David’s. The first thing I , as any self respecting bar fly, did when I got inside was go to the bar and order a Guinness. This is where things didn’t go so well. The going rate for Guinness around Dallas seems to be 4 bucks on the low side, and 5 on the high side. The lukewarm Guiness cost me 6 bucks plus a tip (a record for me). When I say lukewarm, I don’t mean Euro style warm…. I mean the warm beer that has maybe been on ice for 10 minutes, but served anyway warm. The only other thing I found funny were the chairs in the lower area. Do you remember the chairs from grade school? The single piece, solid color hard plastic chairs? The ones that had the hole in the back where the skinny kid in class could stick his head through? The same one that the fat kid, after seeing the skinny kid get laughs from the rest of the class for pulling his stunt got his head stuck in? Well, it looks like Poor David’s got a great deal on the chairs, because they were the only chairs to sit in (and yes, my ass was numb by the end of the show). Other than the crappy chairs, and warm expensive beer, Poor David’s seems like a nice place to enjoy live music.

So how did you enjoy our neck of the woods? This summer maybe we can join you for a few shows! If the homeless people will let me out of my front door anyway.
I agree with everything in your blog. Ian is one the greats, and poor David’s has some nice amenities, but pretty much sucks. Over priced beer in a can, and terrible service. But it supports small and independent artist, and I guess that is what it is all about.
