David Garza at Bend

David Garza
Once again I could be accused of slacking off on my blog posting duties, and I would be found guilty by any standard. I still haven’t written a review of the David Garza show at Bend Studio from a few weeks ago, even though I keep saying that I’m going to get it done. Forgive my slacking, and forgive this review for being shorter than it deserves.

I’ve heard David’s name for years by various artists including Ian Moore. When Ally asked me to take pictures of the show I was pumped about having the chance to finally see the man I’ve heard about for so long. David did not disappoint! The show was fantastic, and the music was invigorating. David is an amazing musician, and gave an amazing performance on his birthday at Bend Studio sold out with his friends, fans and family. This was probably the most emotional I’ve seen a performer on stage. With his little nieces in the front row, he was visibly moved and emotional at several points during the show. That emotion became energy , and really added to the vibe in the room. He also seemed pleasantly surprised that the venue was quiet, controlled and not full of drunks! This, of course, is what makes the quiet non-bar venues like Bend so special.

The show was one of the better shows I’ve seen. David is fantastic on the guitar, and his vocal and lyrical skills will entertain the harshest critic. I believe he is going to be at the opening weekend for Bend Studio in Austin, and if you are reading this and are in the Austin area….you shouldn’t miss that show.

Peter Pan Peanut Butter Recall

Peter Pan Peanut Butter

I ate a Peter Pan Peanut Butter sandwich tonight. I did it for art (not Art). I did it for drama! It was done to feel the full throttle of adventure and risk flowing through my veins!!!

If I don’t survive the night, please insure that the following is carried out.
These are my last wishes:
Send my Kegerator to John in Grand Cayman. Use my FedEx discount before they lock me out of the system.
Give my fishtanks to Novie (she’s better at fish than…someone else…ah-hem).
Give my truck to the first homeless person you can find with a drivers license.
Let Rob and Blake have a mud wrestling match to determine who gets my camera gear.
Give my hair clippers to Viv. I want him to look sharp (read bald) at my funeral.

Peter Pan Peanut Butter

I saw on the news tonight that Peter Pan has a recall for peanut butter that may have salmonella. I have two jars of Peter Pan because everyone knows that only dweezles and freakazoids, and “mom’s” choose Jiff, and the cooooool kids all eat Peter Pan!!!. Why two , the clever reader may ask? Crunchy and smooth of course! Sometimes I feel like a…nevermind. Anyway, both of my jars of the creamy goodness were at least a few months old, and I didn’t think there was any real chance of them being affected by the recall. My local newscaster guided me through the process of determining if my life was in danger. The key to the mystery was to check the lid and look for the product number, and if it started with 2111, it might be a good idea to write a last will and testament in preparation for the pending demise. It would probably be an even better idea not to eat the peanut butter.
Chunky…..
Smooth…..
2111
Both were 2111 product codes.

I’m pretty sure I’m not going to die. At least not tonight, and probably not ever from peanut butter. If I do die, I at least will have killed myself because I was trying to get some goofy pics for this ridiculous blog. If I survive until morning I’ll toss the peanut butter and send in the lids for some cold hard cash, as advised to do so on Peter’s website. You can find more info about the recall on ConAgra’s website. If you don’t have any of the bogus peanut butter, I hope you also don’t have any of ConAgra’s stock!

Ian Moore at Poor David’s Pub

Ian Moore and Kullen at Poor David's Pub

Well holly balls (can i say that on a worksafe sight?). I’m one post away from 200 posts! I never thought I’d write so much when I started this blog, and I defiantly never thought that so many of you sea monkeys out there in cyberspace would actually read the nonsense I write!
But here we go, with post number 199.

Ian Moore and Kullen at Poor David's Pub

The last week or two have been big weeks for me in the realm of live music. In just over 7 days I saw three fantastic live shows. Two of those shows were shows that I’ve wanted to see for a long time, and just never had the chance (Bob and David). The third show was my personal favorite live performing artists: Ian Moore. On top of that I finally got to see a show at Poor David’s Pub’s down town location.

Kullen Fuchs at Poor David's Pub

I’ll limit this post to Ian Moore and Kullen at Poor David’s Pub downtown. As always the show was fantastic, and the music was superb. Even with the token drunk girl in the back row slurring and screaming “Satisfiiiiieeeeedddddd!!!!!” between every single song, and the drunk on the front row who thought he was the world’s best comedian, the show didn’t disappoint. Ian had the comedian thinking he was getting laughs from Ian’s comments about him, when in reality he was making him look like the jackass he was. Ian did finally play the slow (and incredible) version of Satisfied for the back row momma’s delight. Even after seeing him play at least a dozen shows in half a dozen venues, in 2 states…. I still think sir Ian has the best live show around and urge all of you to check him out when he is in your corner of the coral reef (another sea monkey reference….very tropical….keeps me in a good mood in this cold winter….rambling….rambling….SUSAN!!!).

As far as the venue goes, I had mixed feelings. It has a really nice layout for live music. In fact, it reminded me of a mini Billy Bob’s with the horseshoe shaped narrow elevated bar area, looking over the slightly lowered table seating in front of the stage. For a smaller venue, it comfortably holds quite a few people in such a way that everyone can enjoy, see (sea? hummm) the show. The lights and sound system were great, and overall it was very enjoyable. It is also in the up and coming area by South Side Lamar just south of 30 and downtown Dallas (just a short swim away from my favorite coffee and music shop once known as Sandard and Pour’s Coffee). I only had two things that rubbed me the wrong way about Poor David’s. The first thing I , as any self respecting bar fly, did when I got inside was go to the bar and order a Guinness. This is where things didn’t go so well. The going rate for Guinness around Dallas seems to be 4 bucks on the low side, and 5 on the high side. The lukewarm Guiness cost me 6 bucks plus a tip (a record for me). When I say lukewarm, I don’t mean Euro style warm…. I mean the warm beer that has maybe been on ice for 10 minutes, but served anyway warm. The only other thing I found funny were the chairs in the lower area. Do you remember the chairs from grade school? The single piece, solid color hard plastic chairs? The ones that had the hole in the back where the skinny kid in class could stick his head through? The same one that the fat kid, after seeing the skinny kid get laughs from the rest of the class for pulling his stunt got his head stuck in? Well, it looks like Poor David’s got a great deal on the chairs, because they were the only chairs to sit in (and yes, my ass was numb by the end of the show). Other than the crappy chairs, and warm expensive beer, Poor David’s seems like a nice place to enjoy live music.

late night update

Man, what a weekend for live music!!! Come to think of it….what a week for live music? In just over 7 days I’ve seen 3 acts that I’d put in my top 5 live shows. Several people have asked where the pics from Ian Moore at Poor David’s Pub, and David Garza at Bend Studio are. I apologize to everyone who I told that I would have pics of both shows up by Sat. night. I missed the mark by about 2 hours.

It’s late, and I’m worn out. I’ve posted the pics in my gallery, but have not yet written reviews of the shows. I’ll try to have them up before the Super Bowl, but this time I won’t make any promises. I will say both shows were great, and all you sea monkey’s who didn’t go to the shows missed out!!!!
