Bob Schneider at Fort Bend

Bob Schneider

It seems long overdue, but last night I finally got to see the show that everyone has been telling me I absolutely had to see. The show that might just take top honors for the best live show. Not only did I finally get to see Bob play, but I also got to see him play at the grand opening of Bend Studio’s satellite location in Fort Worth (everytime I say Fort Worth…I think Fart Worth…not sure why).

First things first. Ally David tells me that she has not yet decided what she is going to refer to the new location at Soul Fitness Yoga in Fort Worth as. For my own devices, I think I will refer to it lovingly as Fort Bend. SO, how was Fort Bend? I must say I was very impressed. The building is two stories, and like Bend has the studio upstairs. The space is quite large, and even with a large portion unused, offered more space than the Dallas location. The walls were lined with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the street on one side, and down town Fort Worth on the other. It provided a fantastic view, and great atmosphere. The sound and stage were well set providing a fantastic night to the more than 100 patrons who filled the space for the sold out show. I will be excited to see what other shows take place in this exciting new venue.

And what about Bob?!?!?! How was the show I keep hearing about? The show Courtney (who doesn’t drink, cuss, and listens strictly to country music…) said is racy and fantastic. Before I go on, pardon me while I fix myself a frosty beverage.

Ok, I’m back with some of Grandpapy’s cough medicine and Redbull in hand. Ahhhhh.
Back to the task at hand! Bob! Tell me about Bob. Bob put on a fantastic show. His music sneaks up on you and then smacks you on the back of the neck. Most of what he played last night was pretty mellow and low key. His voice tended to say soft, with a lighter and with a higher pitch than you might expect out of the burley man who is Bob Schneider. The beats were light at times with almost an island feel, but never far from it’s folkie roots. What is great about the music is that it is light and easy to listen to. Light enough you can enjoy it without thinking about it, but if you listen to the words….. If you dive into the lyrics you are opening Pandora’s box, and will probably find yourself either shocked, laughing your ass off, or both. The lyrics are very vivid and paint pictures easily seen in the mind’s eye. Just as soon as you have painted a nice pretty picture in your mind, you might be surprised to see what it is. I almost sprayed my beer through my nose when I took a step back to look at the picture old Bob drew in my mind, and found it was God with a big dick and bag of good cocaine.

All in all I would say the show was great. He made my top 5 shows list for sure. The only thing that I was disappointed in was that I felt like he was holding back on us. As mentioned before most of the music was vocally very light and soft. Bob is a big guy, and I’m positive that there is a monster of a voice hiding in there somewhere. On a song or two he opened up a little bit, and hinted to the fact that he could probably flat out wail if he wanted to. I really would have liked to hear a little more of that. I take that back!!! There were two things I was disappointed in. Bob got a 2 minute standing ovation from a packed audience, and didn’t play an encore (even though he left his guitar on stage…the perfect set up for an 2nd go!). I got the feeling that a lot of the crowd was shared in my disappointment. I got over it, and I’m pretty sure they did too. Do you know how I know? Because I heard at least 10 people on the way out of the show, including me and including Nikki, say four words over and over from his final song Mudhouse. Over and over on the way out, you could hear people under their breath, or in a full out scream on the way to the parking lot : “AINT GOT NO DOPE!!!” It was a great show, catch him if you can!

Smack…. SUSAN!!!!

weenie!!!!

I’ve had 3 people in the last 8 hours give me trouble for not posting in my blog this week. The major problem right now is I’m not sure what to blog about. The last week has been pretty low key. I put a new battery in my truck…..I think that’s the highlight of the week…Do you want me to blog about that Keni? Do you want me to blog about that Rob? Do ya!?!?! I could tell you all about the 760 cold cranking amps of glory! How my truck now starts like this: “va va VOOM” instead of how it sounded last week “va va va va va voooooooooooom”. But who the hell wants to read that? SMACK! SUSAN!!!

What else? The weather has sucked over the past few weeks. It was snowy/icy last week, followed by low 30’s and rain. Lots of rain. More rain in one week than can remember in the last 10 years or so. See what I mean? There just isn’t much to blog about right now. I’m working on a few things that will be fun to share in the next few weeks. I bought a Kill-A-Watt. It’s a device that measures the power useage for anything you plug into it. I’m trying to save a few bucks on my electric bill and finding out some very nerdy yet cool information with the device that I’ll soon share. I spend over 30 bucks a month just keeping my computers on all day….and 15 a month keeping my cable box and tuner on…. DAMN!!!! I was going to hold out on that info until I get more info and do a big super nerd post…but I just blew it. More to come

[23:33] zdive: dont make me smack you around and call you susan
[23:33] bdesign: what

[23:33] zdive: you just made my blog
[23:34] zdive: and had no idea!

Pictures, Music, 24, Oh My!

Charlie Sexton

Belive it or not, I’m actually caught up on my music reviews and blogging! With Charlie Sexton and Carter Albrecht discussed in this very post….I am alllllll caught up! The pics below are from the show at Bend Studio. I have heard about Charlie for years, and really enjoyed listening to people who have played with him (like the lovely Shannon McNally). Carter plays with the local Dallas band Sorta, who I saw at Son’s of Herman Hall in Deep Ellum. I think Carter was sick the night I saw them play, and I’m happy that he was good to go that night. Both Charlie and Carter put on great sets. Carter is a huge (read tall) guy, and knows how to tap into the size and power of his voice. Charlie was an electric personality who went on stage with no less than 7 guitars and a piano (no, it wasn’t a keyboard, it was a portable piano…who woulda’ thunk it?). Both artists would be worth seeing again, so check them out when you get the chance.

Oh yea! Bend is opening a 2nd location in Fort Worth. I’ll be at the first show, and will report back later this month.

24 Season Six started tonight! Two hours of 24 madness, to be followed by 2 more hours tomorrow night. What am I going to do when Lost starts in a few weeks? That will be 2 shows that I have to watch every week….not sure I can make the time….but I MUST! I may even have to watch the first few weeks of American Idol. I’m not a true “Idol Fan”, but I do enjoy watching the first few weeks of people making total fools of themselves. I know a lot of you guys follow this show, so I hope this isn’t too offensive, but to me after the good singes have been sent to Hollywood, the show is just a 3 month long Karaoke contest. As you might imagine, I couldn’t care less about that part of the show.
