Ian Moore at Granada Theater

Ian Moore and Kullen Fuchs at the The Granada Theater

Ian and Kullen in Dallas

My goal is to keep this review short. We’ll see how badly I fail in my quest to attain that goal. I’ve written so many Ian Moore reviews, I don’t want to sound redundant. I might actually see if I can put way too many pics in here….just cuz I can. :) So here goes:

Ian Moore in Dallas

The show was fantastic as always. I was surprised that it was an Ian/Kullen Duo because all of his shows that I have seen at the Granada have been full band shows. All of his shows are great, but to me the duo shows are the best. The play list was great, and there was only one song that I had not heard before.

It was a Sunday night show, so the venue wasn’t super packed (I’d guess 100 or so people). This worked great for me because I was able to get good seats up close, and also able to move around to try to get some good shots. I think I finally got some good pics of Kullen. Every time I’ve taken pics of him, I’ve had a seat with an obstructed view. I guess that’s easy to understand since he has the hardest working performer on any stage. I can’t even count all of the instruments that he plays on any given show. So the odds of not having a mic stand, key board, or other piece of equipment in the way is pretty slim. Just watching him play so many instruments at the same time is a show in and of itself.

Maybe I’m just getting old. The reason I enjoy Ian’s show so much has changed quite a bit from the early days. The quality of the music and the show were and still are huge, but now there is more. The fact that I have seen him so many times and have so much of his music seems to make the show that much more fun to go to. Shows are different when you know what to expect, enjoy the subtle changes and different versions of old favorites, compared to your virgin experience with a new artist. Don’t get me wrong, I always love seeing new artists, but there is just something about seeing a proven class act. I can say with great certainty that you can’t go wrong with an Ian Moore show.

On t that note. Bend Studio has some great recordings from shows that Ian played there over the past few years. The most recent show (from this year) is a double CD. They left in all of the commentary and discussion with the crowd, and you get to hear a lot of the songs that are not on any other recordings, and you can only hear live. Click here, and scroll about half way down the page for his CD.

For my listening pleasure, the second show I ventured out to see this weekend was Cary Hudson and Shannon McNally at Bend Studio’s listening room. I almost hate to admit it, but this was another show that I didn’t know what to expect until the first cord was struck. I didn’t get a chance to listen to any of Cary’s music before the show, and Shannon doesn’t have any of her music on her myspace currently. Sometimes the best shows happen when you don’t know what to expect; thus was the case on this night.

The show opened with Cary Hudson. If I were given the task of summing up Cary’s Music in just a word, I am confidant that I could do so. It’s a long word, and word that is fun to spell really fast. That word is: Mississippi. I would classify Cary’s sound as south eastern folk, with a strong lyrical and emotional connection to the great state of Mississippi. If you ever want to learn about the great people and cuisine of Mississippi, Cary can enlighten you.

Cary sang very well and was very comfortable being on stage. The music I would say was generally of a light hearted nature (read funny). Style was a great mix of different tempos with power levels ranging from slow and easy to feet stomping, harmonica whaling jams that had the whole crowd keeping the beat with at least one extremity. He previewed Shannon’s voice to the audience when he asked her to come and sing with him for a song. With that preview of Miss Shannon, I knew that the 2nd half of the show was going to be at least equally as impressive as the first. I really enjoyed Cary’s performance and I am confidant that the rest of the crowd did as well. In fact, that was the first opening performance at Bend that I have seen who got a standing ovation followed by an encore. In fact, I think that’s the only time I’ve ever seen that.

Next came Shannon McNally. I know this might not exactly follow with the general guidelines or template of a music review, but I have to comment on the fact that the first thing I noticed when Shannon took the stage, was the fact that she had on the coolest belt buckle that I’ve ever seen. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed a belt buckle before….so I thought it might be worth talking about. 

The quality of Shannon’s voice is hard to describe. I think soulful would be a good term that does a good pretty good job at capturing something that can be so difficult to describe with only words. She played in typical Bend style with just her voice and guitar for the majority of her set. I was very impressed when she laid the guitar down and sang A cappella for a few moments. What a great way to see someone’s true talent. When they not only stand in front of you and play their music alone with only their guitar, without a bunch of other instruments to mix with their voice, but to then drop the one instrument you have and stand alone. Naked is the word that comes to mind. She sang alone, with only the microphone (which she didn’t need! Her voice is more than powerful enough to fill a larger room) and did an amazing job. Very impressive.

I would say her sound is also a southern/south eastern folk. She hails from New Orleans, and you can defiantly feel that musical spirit in her voice. Her voice reminds me of someone, but as usual I can’t quite place it. Like Cary, she was also very conversational and comfortable up on the little stage. Her smile, and the fact that she sings with her eyes open made my job of taking pictures pretty easy. Chalk that one up to another great evening of music at Bend Studio. I went in not knowing what to expect, and left well entertained and impressed. You can listen to their music by following the links below (Shannon as some music on her non-mypace page). If either of these artists find themselves in your neck of the woods, make sure you lend them your ear.

what a weekend

Holly crap…what a weekend!
Stay tuned, I have 2 more shows to review with more good pics that shoudl be up by Monday night.

I went to 3 live shows, rode over 65 miles on my bike. Survied one wipe out. Had drinks with the “Old One” did laundry…..and am still going (but not for long!).

What a great and full weekend.

I just got back from the Ian Moore show. To the dozen or so of you jokers and sea monkies who didn’t call me back, text me back, e-mail me back, or did contact me and balk at the idea of a sunday night show… I feel bad in telling you that you missed one of the very best live shows of the year! What a killer show.

More to come.

I’m off to bed.

Foker….OUT!

My plan this weekend is to go see and shoot three shows, starting with Emily Elbert and Becky Middleton at Standard and Pours. A 2mph bike wipe out might keep me from seeing all three shows….but that’s another blog post altogether. I hear some girls dig guys with knees that are as big as softballs…..

Pascal told me months ago that I needed to make sure and check out this 17 year old wonder girl who was becoming a local favorite at her place. I checked out her Myspace and was very impressed and made sure to take Pascal’s recommendation and I went to see her play last night.

So what is there to know about Miss Emily? First of all she is already kicking ass at 17 years old. Her voice is very developed and refined, and her guitar playing is more than good enough to keep up with her vocals. She will soon be attending the Berkley School of Music where I’m sure she will take the skills and talents she has and hone them to a fine edge. However….I am afraid that recently Emily must have done something bad. She might have kicked a bunny, cheated on a test, or even have failed to recognize Texas Tech as the cooooolest University in the known universe. I’m not exactly sure what it was, but it had to be pretty bad because her house got struck by lightning lat week! Apparently it was bad enough that they can’t live there until after Christmas. Poor Emily’s family (Poor Bunny! : ) ).

Back to the task at hand Zach. You are rambling. Off on a tangent. Getting off course and off of the beaten path. Getting into uncharted territory…..

The show was very entertaining. Most of the show was just Emily with her voice and her guitar sitting cross-legged in her stool. She played a few songs with a friend of hers from school in the middle of her set. Emily’s voice is very mellow with a jazzy feel to it. I would love hear what she can do with her voice with a few well placed horns behind her. It really surprised me how genuinely surprised and grateful she seemed to be when people would clap after a song, or even cheer because the next song she announced was a song they knew. She is not yet the experianced (jaded?) artist that just expects or doesn’t even notice such antics from the crowd. I could try to describe her music, but it might be more effecient to check out her myspace. She has four good songs on her page if you would like to get a feel for her style and for her sound. You can also buy her whole album for $10 (or .99 per song) on iTunes. I haven’t figured out how to create an iTunes link yet, but she’s easy to find if you search her name. Overall I was very impressed with her show, and would defiantly recommend her to anyone who enjoys good mellow live music. I have a feeling we will be seeing more of Miss Emily.

Emily and her friend at Standard and Pouors

Becky Middleton played immediately following Emily. I am sad to say that I was only able to stay for a few songs, but I’d still like to write a few words for her. Becky sat down to play the biggest damn keyboard I have ever seen in my life. This thing had to be as big as a twin bed, and was defiantly bigger than she was! She sat down and played that keyboard and sang her songs. When I say she sang…. I mean she really sang! That girl has some pipes! She has one of those voices that just hit you, and you can’t help but be amazed that so much voice is coming out of such a small person. The four or five songs that I got to here were well played and I enjoyed them. I hate that I couldn’t stay, but maybe I’ll be able to catch another show around town. She also has several of her songs on her myspace. All in all it was a great night at Standard and Pours! If you get the chance you should check out Emily and Becky; they both play around Dallas and won’t disappoint.

Texas Tech vs. TCU

John Durrant at the Tech vs. TCU game

After a looooong awaited off season, last weekend I was finally able to go to my first Texas Tech football game of the season. While disappointed that we didn’t play well and lost (more on that later), I have to admit that I had one of the best weekend days that I’ve had in a long time.

First of all it was Rob’s birthday. A group of 10 of us all met in Fort Worth at Joe T Garcias for lunch and drinks before the game. Almost all of the Tech crew was there including Blake, Keni, and John. Novie and Vivek, Rob’s parents, Stacy and little Liliana (don’t pronounce it her name lili-anna, I got yelled at for say that! Haha) were also with us. I enjoyed the meal and my friends; I had always heard about Joe T’s, but that was the first time had the chance to go. From there 6 of us went to the game on TCU campus. Yet another place that I have driven past but never set foot on.

TCU didn’t seem like they were prepared for the big crowd that came to the game. They said that was the 3rd largest crowd they have ever had and they did not seem like they were ready for it. Parking was a nightmare. The lines to get into the stadium were about the slowest lines I’ve ever been in other than the DPS. There were huge lines outside even as the game started just because there were not enough ticket agents, and the ones they had were ungodly slow. That, of course, didn’t stop me from sneaking in a dozen or so Joe T. Garcia tortillas and a few flasks of bourbon :) The Tech Survival kit . Rob’s dad joined us at the game, and I told him I’d that I had never done that before his son corrupted me. Happy Birthday Rob!!!!

Blake ruined my picture!!!!! :)

When we got to the game I sent a text message to my good friend Jonathan who is a TCU alum (and current MBA student) who I used to skydive with. He lives in the area, so I figured I had pretty good odds of him being there. It would be really good to see him since I normally only see him a few times a year. Luck was with me, and Jollyman was in fact at the game. I soon after got a text from Courtney, my beautiful Texas Tech skydiving buddy, saying that she too was at the game. Both of them ended up coming to sit with us for a while. That was nice! We had 5 of the normal Tech crew at the game, Robs dad (very cool guy) and two friends that I usually only get to see a few times a year. That helped make up for the terrible game!!! We sucked… I have to admit it. We couldn’t seem to catch anything, and our QB seemed like he was getting nervous in the pocket. No good when you are a passing offense!!!! TCU didn’t play much better. Four field goals…how boring is that? As bad as we played they should have killed us by 30 points.

You guys would be proud of me. On the way out of the stadium I tossed my last tortilla. A cop saw me do it and “detained me”. He got into cop mode, pointed at me grabbed his radio like he was talking or listening to someone important and demanded that I give him ID “right now!”. He pointed to a spot about 3 feet away from him where I was to stand. Being the blogging fool that I was, I wasn’t worried at all about getting a ticket or getting arrested. I thought… if I get arrested for throwing a tortilla…that will be the best blog post of all time!!!! Haha. Jolly had my back, standing a few feet away from me acting like he was just a fan, but keeping tabs on everything. Thanks for having my back Jolly! The rest of the gang waited for me just outside the main isle. I’m just glad he didn’t search me since I had an empty 500ml flak in my back pocket. I don’t think anything would have happened since it was empty, but I’m sure he would have messed with me more. About 2 mins or so later, the cop gave me my ID back and told me I could go…. But the Matador song had just started…. I couldn’t leave in the middle of the Matador song!!!! So I walked right up to the rail next to the cop, put my guns up and finished the song!!!! “ Strive for honor….evermore….LONG LIVE THE MATADOOOOOORRRRRR!!!!!”

From there we went to the TCU tailgate party with some of John’s work friends. We talked to some great people, had some food and drinks and ended up heading back to Jonathan’s house to hang out. We told old stories, watched skydiving video’s and just had a good time for a few hours.

What a great weekend!!!!
