Dreams Cancun Hotel and Spa, a review. Cancun Mexico

As promised in my first Mexico trip blog post (link at bottom of this post), below you will find a review of the Dreams Resort and Spa in Cancun Mexico. Over all I was very impressed with the operation, and had a great vacation with their help!

In all honesty, there are only a few things you need to know about a hotel, and I’ll try to knock those out in short order:

Staff: All of the staff was very friendly and polite. While I spoke as much of my broken Spanish as possible, it was not necessary as all of the staff speaks moderate to fluent English. We interacted with a lot of staff (waiters, bar tenders, room service, concierge, “entertainment staff” and many others) and everyone was great. The only people that rubed me the wrong way a little bit was the vendor they had selling “activities” (like going to the Maya Ruins, Scuba, party boat etc.). If you are not used to Mexican salesmen, it can be a frustrating experience. They go from being helpful and informative, to “I have the very best price for you, everyone else will screw you, and you need to make up your mind and pay me right now.” Just remember, EVERYONE has the best deal down there, and there are 40 people with in a block or a phone call that will sell the same thing to you and probably at a better price (Note, the guy who bugged me didn’t work for the hotel, he was a vendor the hotel used).. Don’t let them pressure you. Other than that everyone was fantastic.

Room:
The rooms were everything that you could hope for in an ocean hotel. They were well sized, clean and with all of the amenities you could want. We purchased the all inclusive plan, so even the Caronitas (8 oz Caronas) in the mini fridge were free. The bathroom was large with a nice sized shower. There was a safe large enough to fit my camera and all of our important documents and cash in easily in the closet. The air conditioning worked well, and the patio was outfitted with a table, chairs and full sized hammock. Our room was overlooking the manmade lagoon inside the hotel grounds. Other rooms over look the cliffs of the beach, and I sure would also be nice.

Food:
Part of the all inclusive plan provided for four free restaurants for your dining pleasure. I would say the food was well above average for an all inclusive restaurant. Compared to standard outside restaurants, I would say that most of them would rank 8.5 out of a possible 10. The World Café is their main buffet restaurant. I only ate there twice, but was happy with what I had there for breakfast and dinner. Himitsu Restaurant is their Asian/Sushi spot that overlooks the Ocean. Our dinner there was wonderful, and the view was fantastic. We at the Sea Side Grill more than any other location. It also over looks the ocean (outside) and has good steak and some seafood on the menu. Oceana was also a nice indoor/outdoor spot right on the beach with a good menu of seafood and steak also.

Sushi!

Drinks:
The last time I went to an all inclusive place in Cancun, the drinks were as one would expect: Off brand liquors and drinks that were anything but stiff. I was very impressed with the selection at Dreams. The tap beer was Carona, and most of the liquors I saw were name brand (Jack Danianls, Hornitos, Cuervo, just to name a few). The drinks were poured well and served with a smile. I would recommend you try a Mono Sucio (Dirty Monkey). I kinda got hooked on them ;) .

Other stuff:
The location of the hotel was pretty cool. It was on the point of the sand bar, so it had 2 beach access points. The man made lagoon with sandy beach inside the hotel grounds really added nicely to the atmosphere and feel. There is plenty that you can do for free (we had fun on the Kayaking trip), and the night trips to the club with the hotel staff was much cooler than I thought it would be. We paid about $20 less than we would have paid at the door to get into one of the big clubs (Daddy Rock). We got in the VIP door (no line), got our own table, waiter, free drinks and bottle of Cuervo. On top of that Freddie and Zarie (I’m pretty sure I messed up her name) were a lot of fun and kept everyone dancing and having a good time. They were the hotel entertainment staff that took us to the club. With all of that said, I guess the bottom line is that I would defiantly go back to Dreams Cancun, and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good place to stay while on vacation in Cancun Mexico

Ian Moore with Kullen Fuchs at Bend Studio. A review.

Trumpet

Wednesday night we went to Bend Studio to see Ian Moore and Kullen Fuchus play. This was the first time that I have ever been to Bend Studio, and I was very impressed. Bend is a Yoga studio by day, that holds small intimate shows at night. The main room at the studio was tiny by most music venue standards. I would guess it is maybe 25 feet by 40 feet? With chairs and floor seating, it looked like they had room for around 50 guests. Their floors are made of bamboo, this coupled with the high ceilings and candle lighting really made the place cozy. The atmosphere was incredible. It is BYOB (I FMOB :( ); this really seemed to keep the atmosphere more personal and intimate instead of a transitive “bar” feel with people coming and going all the time to get drinks and to talk. You almost felt like you were invited to the artist’s home or small gathering where everybody who was surrounding you was just there to enjoy the music. The set up is very simple and yet elegant. The staff was very polite (thanks Ally!) and overall I would highly recommend a concert at Bend Studio to anyone. This would be a fantastic place for a quiet date, or mellow weeknight out on the town.

Ian Moore and Kullen Fucus

Our front row seats on the floor were fantastic. Cas Haley from Woodbelly did the openning act (pic), and he played very well. He had a blues/island/Cajun vibe. Great guitar work and a fantastic voice. He played a nice quick 30 min set before the main show started.

I thought this was going to be a solo show, but was happy to find out that it was going to be a Kullen and Ian duo. The duo shows are amazing in that with only two performers they are able to make an amazing symphony of sound. As usual, Ian played the guitar, foot drum and lead vocals while Kullen backed him up with vocals, keyboard, trumpet, xylophone and a myriad of other instruments that he often plays at the same time. The solo and duo shows are known for being more intimate and Ian spends more time talking about the songs, music, and conversing with the crowd. Because of the size of Bend Studios, the show was even more personal than normal. The show was fantastic, with a great play list mixed with new and older music. They played great versions of Satisfied and Room 229 that I have never heard before.

I’m starting to lose count on how many times I’ve gone to see Ian Moore play, but this show was fantastic and reminded me of why I always go to see him. His music may not all be main stream, but you can’t help but be awestruck by the absolute vocal and musical talent that he has. This guy knows how to make music, and how to put on a great show. You should check out his webpage, and if he is coming to your town make it a point to go see him play.

Dallas Mavericks vs Miami Heat Game 1 NBA Playoffs. Zach and John’s stupid pill

The American Airlines Center before NBA finals Game One. Mavs vs. Heat

Well, what a night! If nothing else my friends and I found our way into an evening that yielded at least two or three good stories that we will be telling over drinks for years to come.

Part One: John’s Stupid Pill

So John, like most people in Dallas right now, is a pretty big Mavs fan. He went to several of the playoff games so far and even when we were in Mexico he made sure we got to see the playoffs on TV. Right after Dallas won the series with Phoenix he bought 8 lower level tickets to Game One of the NBA Finals (Dallas vs. Miami). The only problem was that he paid top dollar (he threatened me with my life if I were to reveal the amount…). Not only did he pay top dollar, but the idea was to sell most of them off so that he could go to the game for free. Well…. To make a pretty long story short, he bought at the peak of demand and paid way too much for the tickets if he hoped to be able to sell and make any money. So much so that it didn’t look like he would even be able to get his money back (not even half). Ouch. In true John style, he decided that if he was hosed on the deal, he might as well eat the whole thing and take all of his friends to the game to have a night to remember. WHOOOHOOOO. So John’s stupid pill results in Zach going to the game for free with his buddies.

Part Two: Zach’s Stupid Pill

Those of you who follow this blog know that I love to take pictures and almost always have a camera with me. I thought it would be fun to get some good pics of all of us at the game, and maybe some game shots, so I took the Canon XT to the game. At the security checkpoint they said the lens on my camera was too big, and that I would have to check the camera at the security station. Well dayum (that’s Texan for Damn)! While following the security guard over to the station, I was sweet talking BIG TIME. I was pulling out every trick in the book, and was making progress!!! She was softening up and I thought I had a chance at getting her to let take the camera in. Sadly, it was not meant to be. I ended up having to check the camera. From there we went to our seats and watch a great first half of the Mavs game. Dallas came back from being behind, and went into the half ahead. The energy and atmosphere at the game was great, and I was right there with my buddies at the very first Mavs finals game ever. Well, things were about to change for me.

Right at the half Rob reminded me of a half baked plan that I dreamt up to get my camera back. Me being me (read: being dumb) thought I’d give it a shot. So I walked down to the desk where I had to check my camera and tried to implement “The Plan”. The plan was to tell them that I had to leave early, snag my camera, and go back to my seat. I thought if they asked to escort me out, I would be fine since I had my ticket and could just run over to another entrance and get back in. Bingo Bango, I’d be back in the game with my camera.
The Plan didn’t exactly go as I had hoped it would. I walked in and told them that I had to leave early. They very politely gave me my bag back and then escorted me out one of the side doors. No worries, this scenario was worked into The Plan. I walked around to another entrance and gave them my ticket to scan. They scan the ticket and the scanner mad this REALLY bad sound. A sound that said to me “Z, I think you are screwed”. It knew the ticket had already been scanned, made the sound and had all sorts of things flashing on the screen. I soon learned, as I tried this at every entrance, that without a hand stamp and a stamp on my ticket there was no way they would let me back in. I sweet talked, asked nicely…did everything that I could do to try to work my way back in for the second half. Zero luck. That part wasn’t in “The Plan”.

Zach kicked out of the game, walking back to Hooters

It wasn’t all bad though. I walked down the hill about a half of a mile to Hooters and watched the second half in there. It was packed with rowdy Mavs fans and was a good place to be. Not as good as in my free seat….but good none the less.

GO MAVS!

Cancun Mexico vacation

Zach, John, Keni and Blake in Cancun Mexico

Alright boys and girls. I’ve been getting all sorts of flack for not posting anything about the Mexico trip, so I thought I would start off with this overview of the trip we took to Mexico last week. It should go without saying that we had a fantastic time and were entertained and refreshed by our stay in beautiful Cancun Mexico. John, Blake, Keni and I spent 6 days on the beach as a much deserved vacation for all of us. Thanks Keni/Blake for putting everything together!

We left Tuesday morning from DFW Airport and were in Mexico before siesta time. We arrived at the Dreams Cancun where we purchased the all inclusive package (free drinks, mini-bar, food, and 24hr. free room service). I think I’m going to do an independent review of the hotel soon (UPDATE: Review can be found here). Please know that the hotel was fantastic with very friendly and polite staff, good food, and nice rooms. It has two beautiful beach fronts, and the very beautiful lagoon that is actually inside the hotel grounds. I would recommend the Dreams to anyone.

Lagoon at Dreams Cancun

The weather was the only thing that wasn’t as nice as I hoped it would be. I spent weeks and weeks in Cancun as a child, and have visited the city probably close to 10 times. We had more clouds and more rain that I ever remember. It didn’t break the trip, but we had 2 afternoons/nights where it rained for more than 10 hours. We only really had 2 days of great tropical Cancun weather (see pics below), and the biggest tragedy was that we didn’t have a single epic sunset for me to take pics of. Man isn’t that great!!!! The biggest problem that I had all week was a little rain and lack of a good sunset. Man I wish every week was so care free!

We had a great week with an incredible mix of activity and lounge chair time. We mixed things up well with time spent at the pool, beach, markets, bars/clubs etc. We didn’t make it out to scuba dive, but did get to take the Jungle Tour and go snorkeling on the coral reef. I was amazed at how much damage was done to the mangroves by the hurricane. They used to be green and lush as you drove your boat through the paths, but now they are 80% dead. The hotels on the beach were also about 60% closed down.
Did we let all that slow us down? No way!

Blake got some FANTASTIC pics, please check them out here

More to come. Stay tuned!
