“Mmmm mmmm bye”

Mmmm Mmmmm bye.

Are you a “mmmm mmmm bye” person? I’m not sure if it’s even fair to ask that question because I don’t think most people who say mmm mmm bye even realize they do it. I just started to notice this recently, and it amazes me how many people do it. The next time you are on the phone with someone, and it is time to say your closing salutation, listen to what the other person says. You might just hear them say “ mmmm mmmm bye” , or some variation there of.

I think it some how evolved form some perfunctious things people say at the end of a call to be polite even if they don’t mean it. It makes no sense whatsoever, but I think it evolved from people saying “uh-hu, bye” when the person on the other end of the phone says thank you at the end of a call. “ Yadda yadda yadda yadda, thanks for your help.” Then the ever so impersonal and almost but not quite polite reply: “Uh-hu, bye”. Could this be it? The origin of mmm mmm bye? If so how and why did it go from “Uh Hu bye”, which is bad enough, to mmm mmm bye. Also, when did we stop using it in context and just us it at the end of every call? I think I could tell people to go to hell, and they will still say “Mmm mmm bye”.

Do you guys do this? Do you realize you do it? Can you tell me why you do it or what your variation of it is?
