Blockbuster has had a real hard time recently, and they just reported their biggest loss in company history. I was just thinking about Christmas gifts, and then something hit me that might really be bad for Blockbuster. Blockbuster gift cards have been a stand by for years for Christmas and birthday gifts for me, but this year I won’t be buying any. Why not, you may ask? Well, many of my friends (as well as I) have Blockbuster Movie Passes. I risk giving someone a gift card that they wouldn’t likely use since they might already have a way to get movies without paying at the counter. Sure you can get an extra movie over your limit, or buy drinks/popcorn etc, but I think in general people will be much less likely to use a Blockbuster gift card this year than last year. That also brings up the idea that the movie pass might hurt their other retail sales. When I just get movies, I don’t have to pay, show my membership card or do anything other than give the guy my old movies, and let him scan my new ones. I love how fast it is, but am less incline to buy a Coke since that will increase the time I spend at the counter several times over. I’ll be interested to see if the effects of the Movie Pass on retail sales and gift cards further puts a dent in their bottom line.
